Lip Balm

My lips are always chapped and I’m constantly reaching for lip balm. Problem is that most of the ones available at the store make my lips react. Who wants that? I’m not a fan of the painful little bumps that like to make their presence known every time my lips decide they don’t like something. The good ones are also so expensive.

So I decided to try making my own. And, I succeeding in making one that is so deliciously smooth and creamy feeling on the lips. It also helps to heal them so you don’t feel a need to be reaching for the lip balm all the time. Which is now slightly a problem because this one feels so good on my lips that I want to use it all the time, but I just don’t need it all the time anymore. Guess that’s a good problem to have, right?

Most people use a base of coconut oil and beeswax to make a good-for-you lip balm. Unfortunately for me, I’m allergic to coconut oil. My skin hates it and freaks out every time it comes in contact. It’s like epic battle grounds. So, I tried a few different oils that your skin loves and cherishes to make a delicious coconut oil free lip balm that is ultra moisturizing and healing.

When making lip balm, you want a rough ratio of 4:1 oil to beeswax, plus whatever goodies you want to add like vitamin E oil and essential oils. Knowing that ratio, you can pretty much put whatever you want together and get a great lip balm out of it.

Here are the ingredients I used and why I picked them for this lip balm.

Almond oil – It’s an incredible moisturizer for dry skin and also helps to restore the skin’s protective barrier.

Jojoba oil – cleans away impurities, and is deeply moisturizing.

Shea Butter – Shea Butter is amazing and has so many benefits for your skin. It’s filled with Vitamin A, which helps treat many skin conditions. It’s also full of fatty acids, which make it ultra moisturizing. It even has the same moisturizers that we have in our own skin. It also aids in the skin’s collagen production which helps with dry skin (i.e. chapped lips).

Cocoa Butter – Cocoa butter is similar to Shea butter and you can actually sub either of them for each other in this recipe if you want. Cocoa butter has a sweeter smell (it smells like chocolate to me). It’s also full of antioxidants and saturated fats that are wonderful for the skin and help to give your skin deep hydration.

Beeswax – Aside from the fact that this is what helps to give the lip balm it’s body, it’s also super moisturizing and amazing at locking in that moisture. It also helps shield against harmful UV rays and prevent against infections. All very important for a good lip balm.

Vitamin E oil – this is a great nutrient for the skin and helps to heal your lips.

Rosemary Essential Oil – This one is great for the skin, it helps to reduce skin irritation, it’s anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory.

Peppermint Essential Oil – Helps to relieve cracked lips and also helps to give them a more puckered look.

Lemon Essential Oil  good for the skin, it’s a natural antibacterial, which is great for protecting your lips.

Tea Tree Essential Oil – This is a strong anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, which I thought would be good to help protect against all the impurities that you encounter throughout the day, especially for city living.

Lip Balm

  1. In a double boiler, add the almond oil, jojoba oil, Shea butter, cocoa butter and beeswax. (I use a measuring cup in a pot with 1-2 inches of water on the stove). Over medium heat, melt these ingredients together completely, stirring occasionally. The beeswax can take a little bit to melt, but give it time and make sure it’s completely melted, otherwise you won’t have a nice smooth chapstick – I made this mistake the first time.
  2. Once melted, remove from the heat and stir in the vitamin E oil and whatever essential oils you want to use.
  3. Carefully pour the melted mixture into chapstick tubes or small tins and set aside to cool and solidify for a few hours. I use chapstick tubes and pour directly from the measuring cup that I melted everything in. The liquid might start to harden as you pour it. I had to wipe the edge a few times to remove solidified wax so that I could pour properly.

  1. Thanks for the recipe. I did change out the almond oil for coconut oil, I have a love of anything coconut! And then I used Thieves and Lemon (Young Living) essential oils. I have to say I struggled pouring the liquid into the tubes, next time I’m going to purchase one of the tube kits that holds them all in place and then you just scrap off the excess once it sets up.
    I love the hap stick, I gave some to all my friends and they love it too.
